New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these medications must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
